Cooperatives are member-owned, member-governed businesses that operate for the benefit of their members according to common principles agreed upon by the international cooperative community. In co-ops, members pool resources to bring about economic results that are unobtainable by one person alone. Most simply put, a cooperative is a business 1) voluntarily owned by the people who use it, and 2) operated for the benefit of its members. Regardless of the goods and services provided, co-ops aim to meet their members’ needs.
Cooperatives are democratic organisations controlled by their members. Men and women serving as elected representatives are accountable to the membership and have equal voting rights (one member, one vote.) At BKW, the affairs of the co-op are determined by the Board of Directors which is elected by and accountable to the membership.
The Co-op is owned equally by all its members - a true cooperative. When new members join The Co-op they buy shares. This is a once only investment and is the same amount for all members.
The people who run The Co-op are all trained, motivated and dedicated to helping members with their specific requirements. Any member, at any time, has access to management and staff.
